6 Winning Tips to Conquer Your Long Haul Flight

Regardless of how much I love traveling, I’m gonna be honest – long-haul flights are brutal, especially flying coach! Before I got the hang of it, I would board all excited but too many hours later, arrive feeling achy and irritable and trying not to glare at the immigration officers 🙂

Of course there’s no magic pill for enjoying a long-haul flight in economy; but, with the following 6 steps, you’ll be well on your way to conquering your long-haul flight, and dare I say it? Arrive as if you’d flown in the lap of luxury!

Tip #1

Pack smartly.  There are 4 items I never, ever, get on a long-haul flight without!

  • My silk eye mask – yes, there will be someone who beams the reading light down right when you finally fall asleep
  • My Bose noise cancelling headphones. Huh, what did you say?
  • My comfortable and supportive sleeping pillow
  • My refresh kit: overnight hydrating mask, hand lotion, toothbrush, toothpaste, mouthwash, wipes & deodorant

Tip #2

Choose your seat wisely.  The earlier you book your flight, the better your odds of getting a good seat—it’s that simple. If you don’t have the big bucks to fly first/business class then why not try for premium economy? Still too much? Then pick a seat towards the back of the plane where your odds of getting a poor man’s lay flat are fairly high or try to snag an exit row seat whether you need the extra leg room or not.

Tip #3

Dress comfortably.  Layer, layer, layer.  If it’s too hot, peel if off, too cold? Keep it on and cover with a nice soft blanket of travel shawl.   Wear  flat, comfortable and nonrestrictive shoes (or carry travel socks to change into).

Tip #4

Hydrate.  No not booze it up, although some wine will surely help the hours fly by and possibly lull you to sleep, hydrate with good ole water!  The air inside most planes are notoriously dry (good to know – A350s, A380s & Boeing 787s  are excellent with their in-flight humidity & pressure control) , so fight off dehydration by drinking plenty of water and in the process you will get some extra steps in with your multiple trips to the restroom (2 for 1 benefit haha).

Tip #5

Carry your own entertainment.  Make sure your apps are updated, your device is fully charged and loaded with books, podcasts, movies and/or games. If you are the creative type, bring along a journal or pad -get your creativity on. Do not depend on the In-Flight Entertainment since often times they fail and/or the selection is less than ideal.

Tip #6

Sleep.  Yes sleep! Whatever it takes get a good night’s sleep the night before your flight and while on the plane – get as comfortable as possible, order some chamomile tea, put your sleep mask on, close your eyes and catch some ZZZs.
